Einstein's Year
2005 is being celebrated--at least in some historical circles--as the "World Year of Physics" in order to honor Albert Einstein's "breakthrough year" of 1905. **** That year he published five papers. The first considered the photoelectric effect. The second discussed his formula for measuring the size of molecules in solution. The third explored atomic theory. The fourth introduced his views on special relativity. The fifth paper continued his ideas on relativity, showing the relation of matter to energy and lauching the famous "E equals mc squared" formula. **** The Chicago Tribune did an in-depth story about Einstein on Sunday, March 27, 2005.

If this is April, it must be
April 13 - anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth **** April 30 - National Museum Day

A Big Change in School Testing
To: Illinois State Residents From: William Paarlberg, past public school teacher and assistant professor in training student teachers Starting this spring, most schools in Illinois will only test in reading, mathematics and science. *** The cultural areas of English, social studies, music, art, etc., will not be part of the Illinois Standard Achievement Tests (ISAT). *** The Illinois State House of Representatives and the Senate have stopped the funding for testing in the cultural areas. As time goes on, students will probably know less about their history and culture or how to plan and prepare for their future in our wonderful United States of America. *** If you are concerned, please contact your State Representative and Senator. Tell them you want funding for all areas. *** Thank you.
