Program Descriptions
ALONG THE CALUMET RIVER -- An educational and entertaining program about the river in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana which has been home to swimmers and fishermen, steamboats and canoes, shipyards and factories for generations. Recreation and industry have co-existed on the banks of the Calumet/Grand Calumet/Little Calumet for decades. It has long been an important resource for communities from South Chicago and the southern suburbs of Chicago through Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in Indiana. Cynthia Ogorek, author of ALONG THE CALUMET RIVER (Arcadia 2004) presents the history of the river corridor in an informal program that invites audience participation. ******* ROMANCING THE SPOON: THE VICTORIAN MANIA FOR SILVER FLATWARE is a show-and-tell program. The table is set with lace and flowers and a sparkling display of silver flatware which highlights the unusual place and serving pieces that complemented the new foods and the new wealth of post-Civil War America.**You'll find out why the Victorians needed four different soup spoons, special place silver for men and for women and a 5 o'clock spoon.**Collection silver since childhood, historian Cynthia Ogorek shares her fascination with grapefruit spoons, bond holders and sardine servers---and all the stories that go with them.
